The Shongweni Model Flying Club (SMFC) was founded during 1998/1999 after negotiation with the management of the Durban Shongweni Club (DSC) to use the polo field at the DSC for our activities. As a result, SMFC is affiliated with the DSC which is home to many social clubs/activities in the Highway area. All members of the SMFC are automatically members of the DSC (but without voting rights) by paying the SMFC annual subscription which, in turn, allows members the use of all the facilities of the DSC.
As we are using a polo field, polo players and their practice/matches have preference for the duration of the lease they have for the field from March to September every year. As a result, there is no flying permitted on certain weekends during the polo season.
The field is maintained by DSC management all year round and is therefore suitable for flying all types of fixed wing aircraft as well as helicopters. Membership of the South African Model Aircraft Association (SAMAA) is mandatory for all SMFC members. Provided members abide by the rules and regulation of both the DSC and SMFC, they are covered by the SAMAA insurance policy (Click Here).
The size of the field is a great advantage in particular in case of a ‘dead stick’ or other emergency landing.

Anyone interested in our hobby is welcome to visit the field to find out more about how to learn fly or to chat afterwards with members at the Saddle Inn over a cup of coffee.
SMFC has dedicated instructors willing to assist new members to obtain their Solo proficiency.
It is also possible to test for higher grades of proficiency up to the Silver rating.
To join SMFC, complete the application form which is available under Contact on this website.
The completed form will be automatically sent by e-mail to the Chairman for processing. As it is mandatory to register with SAMAA, proof of SAMAA membership must accompany the application. SAMAA contact details are available here
Looking forward to meeting prospective new members at the field.
The committee of the SMFC
